Sensorial : Knobbed Cylinder

I have just received my mini-knobbed cylinder from ebay. When I saw it from the net, didnt realise that it was so mini, for the adults' rough hands... but a nice set for lil C's homeschool activity collection. The original standard size of this material contains 10 cylinders with knobs. The mini one only has 5 smaller version cylinders.

Will post lil C's activity with this knobbed cylinder soon.

Materials (Mini-version):

Block 1 : Cylinders vary in both diameter and height.
Tallest cylinder has the largest diameter.

Block 4 : Cylinders vary in height only, same diameter

Presentation:

  1. Introduce the exercise and show the child how to carry the cylinder block.
  2. Using 3 fingers, slowly remove the cylinders starting from the left to the right, and place them in a mixed fashion infront of you.
  3. Lean forward into the hole of the cylinder blocks to show the height has been increased.
  4. Carefully, place each knobbed cylinder back to its sockets, starting from left to right.
  5. Invite the child to carry out the exercise.
Control of error:
Each cylinder has a correct socket. If the cylinders are replaced wrongly, this exercise cannot be completed.

Aims:
Visual discrimination of dimension; volume, thickness, height.

Indirect Aims:
Preparation for mathematics; preparation for writing (finger-thumb which will later hold the pencil)

Language:
Block 1 & 2 : thick, thin, as thick as, not as thin as, wide, narrow
Block 2 & 3 : big, bigger, biggest, as big as, not as big as, small, smaller, smallest
Block 4 : tall, taller, tallest, as tall as, not as tall as, short, shorter, shortest
For holes : Deep, shallow, wide, narrow, shallow, shallower, shallowest
